What is light
Where does the light we see come from?
Light comes from a light source e.g The Sun, light bulbs, candles. Light is reflected off objects and into our eyes - this is how we can see them. Shadows are made when light is blocked. Light cannot travel through opaque objects eg metal and wood.
Who is interested in the physical properties of light?
The physicist is interested in the physical properties of light, the artist in an aesthetic appreciation of the visual world. Through the sense of sight, light is a primary tool for perceiving the world and communicating within it.
What do children learn about light in Year 6?
They will explore shadows and learn how shadows are formed when a light source is blocked by an opaque item. Children will consider the dangers of looking directly at light sources (mainly the sun) and how they can protect their eyes. In Year 6 children consolidate their knowledge of light gained in Y3.
Why do some objects reflect more light than others?
The reflected light from objects is absorbed by our eyes to form images of the world around us. Smooth surfaces such as mirrors, water and some metals reflect the most light which is why they appear shiny.
